RoadMap To Death

Developed using p5js, Teachable Machine, MaxMsp, and MIDI
Co-developed with Alicia Zhang and Alexis Lozoya
Project Overview
Ranging from gun violence to the atrocities of war, this interactive performance intends to bring light to the reality of our world.
Technical Overview
Using the pose model in Teachable Machine, we connected different visuals to certain poses that are based on the different types of violence. Alongside the poses are instructions that are read by a synthetic voice to help signify the fear and dehumanization of all of the violence we chose to portray. Overall, paired with the visual effects, we intend to create a sense of anxiety and unease about gun violence.

In the technical aspect, we connected our pose model from Teachable Machine to Max patches through p5js, which sends OSC data to indicate the types of violent images and/or videos to play in response to certain poses. We then process those imageries through Vizzie objects (posterizer, separator, transformer), which are various effects controlled by MIDI, and present the final video. The MIDI also controls the timing of the instructions and the heartbeat background soundtrack.
My
Contributions
  • Pose Presenter (in the performance video)
  • Trained the pose model in Teachable Machine
  • Connected between Teachable Machine, p5js, and MaxMSP to sync the OSC data from the trained pose model to MaxMsp
  • Experimented with Vizzie objects in Max for visualizations
  • Formatted and commented on the MaxMSP patches for presentation
  • Edited the documentary video to showcase the presenter video and performance video side by side and post it to YouTube
